Are you a volunteer or a support to a family member who is elderly or has a disability? This webinar, sponsored by the National Medicare Education Program, will take place on February 10, 2011 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. EST. NMEP trainings educate professionals and volunteers who work with seniors and people with disabilities to help them learn about Medicare and make informed health care decisions. Registration deadline is February 3, 2011.

Kid's ice fishing event Sun, January 30, 11:00am – 12:30pm at Lake Whitehall, Hopkinton 
 
Never ice fished, but always wanted to try it? This is a great winter family activity. MassWildlife Angler Education Volunteer instructors and Woodville Rod and Gun Club members will be on the ice at Lake Whitehall assisting anyone who would like to learn about ice fishing as part of the Club's Annual Kid's Ice Fishing Derby. The event runs from 11:00 - 2:30. There is no entry fee for this event, but for purposes of planning, equipment etc, pre-registration is required. The MA Dept of Conservation and Recreation's Universal Access Program (UAP) has put together a Winter 2011 schedule with many wonderful adaptive recreation opportunities for people with disabilities and their families and friends to enjoy indoors and out this season. The activities are held on weekends and some week days in January, February, and March. They include accessible cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, kick sledding, snowmobiling, and ice skating at DCR parks and facilities. For persons with disabilities, free use of accessible equipment such as sit skis and kick sleds, as well as staff assistance, is available. In spring and summer, UAP offers cycling, kayaking, canoeing, rowing, sailing, hiking, horseback riding, letterboxing, bird watching, indoor and outdoor skating with seated sleds, interpretive programs and more. Skilled instructors and volunteers provide equipment, instruction, and support.

MLK Day of Service

Monday, January 17, 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the first observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for communities throughout Massachusetts to honor Dr. King's legacy through service. The Massachusetts Service Alliance is focusing its efforts on strengthening this service day, and encourages all individuals and organizations in every region of Massachusetts to commit to addressing serious needs on this day and throughout the year. When: Sunday, January 9, 1pm – 4pm
 
Where: Upton State Forest Headquarters at 205 Westborough Road, Upton (map)
 
Description: Hike with the Friends of Upton State Forest and explore life in the forest in winter. Meet at the Headquarters area near the intersection of Westborough and Southborough Roads in Upton. (Address is 205 Westborough Road). Dress for the weather. Remember sunscreen and water. A liability waiver is required. Children are welcome with supervision. An adult must sign the liability waiver for anyone under 18.
