The Folk Art Festival of New England is in Marlborough this weekend. Friday 10/30 – Sunday 11/01 at the Royal Plaza Trade Center. Tickets are $8 for adults, and children under 12 are free. A $1 off coupon is available at the website www.FolkArtFestivalofNewEngland.com.

The Marlborough Public Library has Halloween events planned for this week:

 

On Monday Oct. 26th from 4-5 pm, storyteller John Porcino will tell spooky tales. This event is free, just show up!

 

On Tuesday Oct. 27th, the library will host a Halloween party from 4-5 pm. There will be stories, crafts and games. This event is geared to children ages 4 and up. Please call to register – 508.624.6902.

Project Bread, an organization feeding the hungry in Massachusetts, reports that calls to their FoodSource Hotline (1-800-645-8333 which directs callers to food resources in their area) have dramatically increased. If you are considering helping the hungry this Thanksgiving, you can find ways to help at www.projectbread.org.

Public health and school-based H1N1 vaccination clinics are expected in November and December, and will be posted at http://flu.masspro.org as they are scheduled.

The Marlborough Fire Department’s Open House is Sat Oct.10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 215 Maple Street. You can expect hands-on demonstrations,  pizza, popcorn and ice cream at this family-friendly event.

Bring the family to the Marlborough Library’s 40th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the library’s Bigelow Auditorium. This free event is open to the public and will include entertainment for children and adults.

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as "Mental Illness Awareness Week" (MIAW) in recognition of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill’s (NAMI) efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since 1990, mental health advocates across the country have joined together during the first week of October to celebrate. The Marlborough High School Business Professionals of America will host a free, one-on-one computer training class Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Marlborough High School. The one on one training means that you do not have to sign up anywhere.  Please just come in any Wednesday night in October from 6:30-8:30 and a student will sit with you and go over anything you would like to go over. Do you have any out-of-date electronic equipment that you need to get rid of? Bring it down to the Intel Electronic Recycling event on Fri and Sat Oct 9-10. A donation of $10 - $20 is requested from individuals and businesses respectively, which will benefit the United Way of Tri-County. Items available for recycling beyond TVs etc. include computers, monitors fax machines, copiers, typewriters and CPUs. Worcester Animal Rescue League
The Worcester Animal Rescue League is hosting the annual “Paws in Motion” Walk for the Animals on October 24th, 2009. Canine companions are welcomed to join on the mile walk starting at WARL to Indian Lake and back to WARL. Costumes for both are enco...uraged!

Registration: Please register by October 5th by contacting Allie at 508-853-0030 or AllieWARL@gmail.com. There will be a $10 registration fee for human walkers. Walkers collecting pledges over $45 receive a WARL short sleeved t-shirt. Walkers collecting pledges over $65 receive a WARL long sleeved shirt. All canine walkers receive a complimentary doggy bag!

Contests: With a $1 entry fee per contest, include yourself and your dog in any of these contests and win a prize! Best Walker & Companion Costumes, Best Canine Costume, Best Human Costume, and Most Impressive Trick.

Rules: All dogs must have a current Rabies vaccine. Please leave cats and aggressive dogs at home. No females in heat. Leashes must be shorter than 6 feet. No flexi-leads allowed. Family-friendly costumes only. Thank you!

Sponsorship: Pledges will be collected on the day of the walk at the registration table. If you did not recieve a mailing, please call for sponsor sheets and envelopes! For credit card pledges, call WARL with card information prior to walk. Our goal is $100 per walker! All donations are tax deductible.
